Worton Farm Dressage Show Report

WORTON PARK SHOW REPORT 6th and 7th MARCH 2010

This was my first ever attempt at organising an Isis Dressage competition since joining the committee last year and Wow what a way to start!!!! Not only was this show run over 2 days but also included a Royal Windsor Horse Show qualifier on the Saturday and Cricklands qualifiers over both days. With only 4 weeks notice to plan, prepare and get together an army of helpers for this show, I knew it was not going to be a walk in the park.

A slow start with entries turned out into a positively jam packed weekend. Entries flooded in and my organisational skills were put to the test to say the least. Staying up until 11 o clock in the evening trying to juggle dressage times to suit everyone was a mean task itself and not one to be under estimated. With judges booked in advance by Hala Bentley and dressage times uploaded onto the website. I was ready for the Saturday competition to start.

Saturday 6th March
This show started promptly and finished exactly on time. There were some beautiful tests produced on the day reaching winning scores of 70% on more than one occasion.

This show also attracted lots of non Isis members who were quickly indentified and commandeered by myself and Anne Luce; they were swiftly given membership application forms and Schedules for the next Isis competition at Crown Farm. It really was great fun to chat to our members and have a good old fashioned gossip while watching some amazing dressage.

Many thanks go to Penny Gill who relentlessly scored for me all day, not to mention managing to keep all the sheets together due to the side wind running through her lorry. I would also like to say a special thanks to the following for their help, without it I could not have possibly run this show: Our judges Mrs Clow and Michelle Carman, Lauren Basson for writing, Anne Luce, Catarina Erikkson and Karen Nunwick. Despite the bitter cold wind everyone had a fabulous day and really enjoyed themselves.

At the end of a long but productive day Penny and I had a closing memory of trying to dismantle Anne Luce’s borrowed table, our hands were so numb and cold we were both unable to pull the legs off it so I could pack it into my car, this resulted in fits of laughter which didn’t help the situation at all.

Sunday 7th March
I had a slightly earlier starting time on Sunday, due to deciding to take my horse Miss Marple with me to the show in the morning and letting her camp in one of Worton Park’s beautiful stables for the day. Needless to say, she loved all the attention from anyone who stopped to say said hello.

Once again this show started on time and with my Army of helpers, it ran just fabulously. Prelim 18 attracted many riders and produced the best test of the day, Sarah Hazell riding the very elegant Pramie (72.50%); in this class at one point in the morning we had 4 riders on exactly the same %, only to be split by collectives. Except for the Open section in Novice 28 all of the classes were won by Isis members.

Prelim 18 and Novice 28 took a mammoth two hours each to judge, which showed huge support for our opening show of the year. Catarina Eriksson riding her beautiful Braveheart won the open section of Novice 38 and tied equal 1st place with Tammy Norton on the 19 year old Ballymax in the elementary class, giving Catarina yet another consistently foot perfect performance. A special well done goes to Anne Luce who came a very creditable 4th place riding Wunderwelt in her first elementary class, especially since she told me she had only started leg yielding earlier that week. Well Done!

Due to another bitterly cold yet dry day, the back of my lorry gave many members a much needed wind break as they gathered in the sun trap it provided. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed my first and by no means last Isis Dressage Show. It really was worth the late nights and last minute panic attacks (honestly) to see how much our members and non members enjoyed themselves and those who thanked me personally for a wonderful day. All I can say is “You were all very welcome”.

Special thanks go to my long suffering husband Colin, who has developed a new found skill, also known as scoring all day and Anne Luce and her wonderful team, without them, I could not have competed in the afternoon. Jill Smith
